Do you have any way of getting an item providing telekinesis, or getting a point into telekinesis? The boss key is supposed to make sure it falls someplace where you can get to it, but it sounds like this check failed somehow.
never had that issue happen with a boss key.. even with a normal item, sometimes it appears to be out of reach, but if you hug the walls of the chest all around it you generally can get it
